Artist Biography

Lyndsey is an accomplished Sydney based contemporary artist who has travelled extensively. She moved from the beautiful town of Cambridge in New Zealand to Sydney (via the UK) where she now lives. As a child she grew up in a creative home where art was encouraged. At High School she won the 6th Form Art Prize and that is where her artistic career began.

More recently, Lyndsey has been a regular participant in the Open Studio Sculpture Class at The Sydney Gallery School where she also gained a Diploma in Fine Arts. She has also studied at the Julian Ashton School of Art, Waikato Polytechnic but is also very much a self taught, exploratory artist. Her arts practice has travelled with her all over the world in many forms as being creative is a must in her world and it evolves with location and life experience.

Lyndsey’s work has been exhibited and sold in many commercial galleries. Her works have also been collected in Sydney and at regional art exhibitions throughout New South Wales and other states. Her work has been privately commissioned numerous times with many works sold to overseas buyers. She has also held highly successful solo and joint exhibitions.

Artist Statement

I am a contemporary painter based in a leafy Sydney suburb. Working mostly with the natural world in a broad range of mediums. In my painted works I utilise media such as acrylic paint, oil paint, ink, charcoal and pastels. I use these mediums to create evocative images of rugged Australian terrains, vast open spaces. stunning jagged coastlines gathered from recent and distant memory. I also like to return to imagery of my extensive travels especially those through Europe. My sculpture practice is directed more towards creatures and legend and is once again a very broad range of materials and subjects. I often have a direct result in mind, but I am relaxed enough to also let the inspiration take me down differing paths.

Nature, whether sweeping open spaces or my overgrown tree filled yard are a big part of my inspiration. The creatures who inhabit these spaces are also part of my creative processes and often find their way into my artworks. I am an eclectic artist. At times I enjoy solitude and reflection and at others my work is humorous or political. I am constantly inspired by the wonderful planet we live on and take pleasure from moments large and small. I like to capture and enhance my subject matter and hope that I in each work you see a link to myself.

I don’t tend to pre-work my art. Hence my sketchbooks are minimal, but they exist! This (I think) is because I am able to see these works vividly in 3D in my mind and that is where I like to work from as it is much more exciting to me. I do however take location shots (if a spot really talks to me) and study the anatomy of my creatures if needed. I can and do work “en plein air” but am very happy to take a small study back to my studio if wanting to create a larger work. Many of my works take years as I am not a madly prolific artist as such. They change with time and reflection often shape changing (sculptures) or multi-layering in my 2D works.
